Gender equality is a subject of continuous interests to feminists and researchers. This research attempts to examine whether the social prescriptions of the gender identity can lead to disparity in political participation along with the social development and modernization that may cause many changes in the view of traditional gender role. The identity model proposed by Akerlof and Kranton (2000) suggests that identities are prescribed by the ideal behavior of social categories. Based on this model, when one’s behavior is deviated from the norm of gender role, the utility will be reduced. Therefore, the more traditional gender identity in a society, women are more exclusive from the political field and more isolated from the public realm.
Using data drawn from the Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS) 2012 and analyzing with ordered probit estimations, the results of this study show that the traditional gender identity defined by the concept of "men are breadwinners and women are housekeepers" are negatively associated with the probabilities of voting, helping the elected representatives, and participating in political activities. Moreover, gender identity has different effects on political participation for men and women. The results show that the more a woman is inclining to the traditional gender identity, she is less likely to vote in an election and make a complaint, and consequently the status of women in the political arena is significantly lower. As for men, there is no significant effect of gender identity on political participation. In other words, gender identity is not an important factor for explaining political participation for men. The ideals of gender role for men and women defined by social norms have numerous influences in the family, the workplace, and various aspects in the society. It will still need social movements and government intervention to complement with market mechanisms to reach the equality between men and women.
