The exploration of romantic relationship is an important developmental task for college students, and it inevitably occurs with relationship conflicts. In attachment theory, one’s attachment style brings out his/her emotional regulation strategy preferences, and further affects his/her conflict management. After reviewing past researches, it is obvious that despite the particular emphasis attachment theorists place on it, very little effort has been put into developing a measurement for the role of hyper-activation in emotion regulation. This study adds the exaggerate subscale to the existing emotion regulation questionnaire and examines the mediator effect emotion regulation has on attachment styles and conflict management. Participants: 429 college students (161 males and 268 females) who are currently or have been in a relationship. Research Tools: Experiences in Close Relationships (ECR), Interpersonal Interaction Scale, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). Procedure: Collecting research data with convenience sampling in university classrooms. Data analysis: confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson's correlation, hierarchy regression and the bootstrapping method are used to test the indirect effect, the reliability and validity of each questionnaire, the mediating role of emotion regulation, and finally the relationships of the main variables. Results: (1) Each questionnaire has decent reliability and validity. (2) Attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance could negatively predict coordination strategy of conflict management, in which reappraisal mediates the relationship between attachment avoidance and coordination strategy. (3) Attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance could positively predict competitive strategy of conflict management with exaggeration’s mediating effect, in which reappraisal mediates the relationship between attachment avoidance and competitive strategy. (4) Attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance could positively predict accommodation strategy of conflict management, in which suppression mediates the relationship between attachment avoidance and accommodation strategy. (5) Attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance could positively predict avoidance strategy of conflict management, in which reappraisal and suppression have a mediation effect on attachment avoidance and avoidance strategy. Overall, the results support our hypothesis that emotion regulation has a mediation effect on the relationship between attachment style and conflict management. The implications of this study for romantic relationship and intervention, along with future research suggestions, limitation are also discussed.
