The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of parental anxiety and
parental self-efficacy of mothers with elementary school children. The researcher examined if
mothers of various backgrounds (occupation, number of children, parenting experience,
marital status, parenting support, family income and education backgrounds) caused
significant differences on their parental anxiety and parental self-efficacy. The researcher also
analyzed the relationship between the above two dependent variables.
The questionnaire method and PPS sampling were applied to investigate mothers of
elementary school children in Chiayi City and Chiayi County. Two major instruments were
used including ”Parental Anxiety Scale” and ”Parental Self-Efficacy Scale.” A total of 625
questionnaires were collected for analysis afterwards. Through descriptive statistics,
independent t-test, two-way ANOVA and Canonical Analysis, the major findings are
summarized as follows:
1. There is a significant difference between groups of mothers with different occupations in
their parental anxiety and parental self-efficacy. Compared to non-teachers, teachers have
lower parental anxiety and higher parental self-efficacy.
2. Occupation and numbers of children have a significant interaction in parental anxiety. For
mothers of two children, non-teachers have higher cognitive parental anxiety, realistic
parental anxiety and overall parental anxiety than teachers.
3. Occupation and parenting experience have a significant interaction in parental anxiety.
Non-teachers with 6-10 years and 11-15 years of parenting experience have higher realistic
parental anxiety than teachers with the same parenting experience.
4. There is a significant difference between groups of mothers with different number of
children in their parental anxiety and parental self-efficacy. Compared with mothers of
two children, mothers with three children have higher ethical parental anxiety and lower
parental self-efficacy in cultivating children’s value system.
5. There is a significant difference between groups of mothers with different marital status in
their parental self-efficacy. Unmarried mothers have lower self-efficacy than married or
divorced mothers.
6. It makes a significant difference in mothers’ parental anxiety no matter if they have any
parenting support or not. Mothers without any support have higher parental anxiety.
7. The parental anxiety and parental self-efficacy of mothers vary with their family income.
Family income is directly proportional to parental self-efficacy but inversely proportional
to parental anxiety.
8. The parental anxiety and parental self-efficacy of mothers vary with their education
backgrounds. Education background is directly proportional to parental self-efficacy but
inversely proportional to parental anxiety.
9. For both teachers and non-teachers, their parental anxiety and parental self-efficacy are in
inverse proportion to one another.
Finally, based on the results of this study, suggestions are provided for parents, family
educators and future researchers.
