The current study investigated the influences of motor sequence structures on motor sequence learning. The motor sequences were arranged in either a repetitive or an interleaved order. It has been shown that the performance of practicing an interleaved sequence (higher contextual interference level) is generally inferior to that of practicing a repetitive sequence (lower contextual interference level), but becomes superior during the retention phase, a phenomenon known as the contextual interference (CI) effect. We assessed the CI effects on different indices of learning, such as improving, saving, forgetting, and transfer. We further used the community-detection algorithm to investigate how the participants applied the chunking techniques during motor sequence learning. We found that the length of sequence chunks tended to decrease after repetitive practice, but increase after interleaved practice. This finding indicates the difference in chunking patterns between sequences of different contextual interference levels.
