Purpose: Children with disruptive behavior problems negatively impact the child and their parents. For early prevention and intervention, it’s important to effectively assess whether the disruptive behaviors of the children are normal or problematical. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) in two Taiwanese samples. Method: Matched group design was used in the present study. Forty-one caregivers of clinical-referred children with emotional and behavioral problems and their caregivers having some difficulty in parenting and their community controls (n = 41) matched by sex of child, age of child, and the location of residence were recruited in the present study. A series of measures including the ECBI were administered to the caregivers of the both samples in a random order. Results: For the clinical and community samples, the internal consistency coefficients of the ECBI Intensity Scale (IS) and Problem Scale (PS) ranged from .75 to .91. In term of convergent validity, the ECBI IS scores were significantly correlated with the Externalizing Scale scores of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), both for the clinical and community samples, but the ECBI PS scores were not significantly correlated with the Externalizing Scale scores of the CBCL. The ECI IS scores also have been found to be significantly correlated with the Child Domain Scale scores of the Parenting Stress Index (PSI), both for the clinical sample and the community sample. The correlations of the ECBI PS scores and the Child Domain Scale scores of the PSI were not significantly associated for both samples. With regard to discriminative validity, the ECBI IS and ECBI PS scores could discriminae between the clinical sample with disruptive behavior problems and the community sample without disruptive behavior problems. The exploratory factor analyses (EFA) were conducted to examine the factor structure of the the Chinese version of the ECBI in the two Taiwanese samples. The results found the Chinese version of the ECBI was a six-factor structure for the clinical sample, and was a five-factor structure for the community sample. Discussion: In general, the Chinese version of ECBI has good reliability, and acceptable convergent validity and discriminative validity as a multiple-factor structure of the ECBI in the Taiwanese clinical and community sample. Need to use carefully for the convergent validity of ECBI PS were not good. Future studies with larger samples and different populations are needed to replicate and extend the findings of the present study.
