Taiwan is a typical island. Nowadays there are more people participate in the ocean recreations including sailing than old days. However, there has been very little research reported on this topic in Taiwan. The purpose of the study is to investigate the motivations and the benefits in sailing by quantificational questionnaire survey and qualitative interview. The results showed: 1. People who are males under 30 years old, had been participating sailing below three years, and introduced by friends to attend sailing, were the main groups of participants who are willing to promote sailing; 2. The motivations in sailing comprised five dimensions, which were “leisure needs”, “psychological needs”, “social needs”, “esteem needs”, and “self-actualization needs”; and the benefits in sailing were also comprised five dimensions, which were “personal psychological benefits”, “personal physiology benefits”, “social benefits”, “ skill benefits”, and “real benefits”; 3. Each dimension of the motivation and benefit showed significant correlation; 4. The multiple regression analysis showed that ‘self-fulfillment needs’ is the most significant independent variable to predict motivations; And ‘personal psychological benefits’ is the most significant independent variable to predict benefits; 5. The motivations and benefits were divided into two groups respectively according to the level of agreement by K-means clustering method. Each dimension in both groups of the motivations and the benefits were significant different in agreement. The ‘social needs’ in motivations varable and the ‘skill benefits’ in benefits variable showed the most significant difference between groups respectively. Also, the motivations and benefits was significantly correlated (r=0.64, p=0.00). This implies the higher agreement in the motivations the more agreement in the benefits; 6. People who had been participated over three years showed highest motivations; People who are willing to promote sailing had the highest benefits; 7. The participation time were positively correlated with cost spent in sailing; 8. Based on qualitative data, the motivations and the benefits of the serious participants matched with each dimension of the questionnaire; 9. From the interview from serious participants, it was showed that sailing activities create unforgettable memories and special personal experiences in their life. Therefore we conclude that “social needs” and “self-actualization needs” are important to motivations; and, benefits are imfluenced by “personal psychological benefits” and “skill benefits”. The results of this study could be the references for designing and promoting sailing activities.
