The main purpose of the research is to examine the influences of factors on bilateral trade flows between Vietnam and East Asian economies and to evaluate Vietnam’s trade potentials with its partners in East Asia. The empirical estimated results with panel data under the approach of fixed effects covering the time period of 2001-2015 indicate that variables of economic size of East Asian economies, Vietnam’s FDI inflows from East Asia, and FTA with East Asian countries promoted positively to the bilateral trade flows between Vietnam and economies of East Asia region, conversely the change of real exchange rate caused negative impacts on trade. Interestingly, there is no evidence to be found to demonstrate that whether economic size of Vietnam and distance index encouraged or impeded Vietnam’s trade to nations in East Asia. With respect to trade potentials, Vietnam had performed closely to its current potentials with China, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea respectively, even so there was still a huge room to trade more with Taiwan.
