This study examines the association among failure experience, social capital and firms’ innovation performance. First, this paper analyzes how firms develop their exploratory innovation when they experience innovation failures. Second, this paper analyzes how social capital moderates the effect of failure experience on exploratory innovation. This paper chooses three factors to capture the effect of social capital, including industrial cluster, strategic alliances and interlocking directorate. Using sample data from the semiconductor industry, computer and peripheral industry and photoelectric industry, we find that failure experiences will reduce firms’ exploratory innovation performance. Besides, interlocking directorate network can reduce the negative impact of failure experiences. Finally, though industrial cluster and strategic alliances do not have significant moderating impact, they do have positive impact on firms’ innovation performance. Our findings help firms understand how failure experiences will affect innovation performance and how firms can deal with the negative effect of failure experiences on firm innovation.
