With the rapid spread of the Internet and smart phones, people can easily enter the Internet world. In Taiwan, Facebook is the most popular social networking site and adolescents are the largest users. They gather and share information via various social media platforms. Moreover, they frequently use social media to seek others’ feedback and receive others’ ideas and opinions.

At the same time, the sharing of content and receiving of feedback between peers are the main ways for adolescents to obtain knowledge. Hence, this study interviewed 12 adolescents who have used social media for a while through semi-structured interviews, hoping to explore the motives behind adolescent feedback-seeking behaviors and the impact on adolescents’ self-identities and values after they receive feedback.

This study found that the motive for seeking feedback in public was self-enhancement; whereas, the motive for seeking feedback in private was self-verification. Additionally, “Like” is more influential than a message when adolescent receives feedback. If an adolescent’s feedback-seeking behavior does not receive enough “Likes”, the adolescent’s self-identity declines. Moreover, this study also found that the meaning of giving and accepting “Likes” is inconsistent. The degree of tie would not only influence the meaning of positive or negative feedback, but it would also have different impacts on an adolescent’s self-identity and value.
