Nella Larsen’s Quicksand (1928) and Passing (1929) explore identity’s complexities and the racialized miniature of American society in the roaring twenties. As a female mulatto novelist of the Harlem Renaissance, Larsen’s biracial experience and background enrich her novels. Her novels give us a precious glimpse of the identity conflicts, the racial plight, and the social invisibility of an educated biracial woman in her times. This thesis aims to analyze the identity conflicts of the female protagonists in Larsen’s novels with the aid of feminist theory, psychoanalytic theory, and queer theory. I propose to deconstruct the essentialist ideology of identity in its belief in something that is “natural,” unchanging, and stable. Her heroines’ tragic quest of and obsession with a stable identity indicate the oppressive nature of essentialist identity, which also tends to be a regulatory instrument of heteronormative regime.
