The purpose of this study was to explore the correlation between recovery and quality of life for people with mental disorders living in the community, as well as to discuss the differences in these two aspects amongst people with mental disorders of different backgrounds. A cross-sectional study with convenience samples technique was conducted, and the instruments used in this study included personal backgrounds, and two structured questionnaires: Stages of Recovery Scale and World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF Taiwan version. A total of 103 valid questionnaires were collected from five community rehabilitation center in southern Taiwan.
The results showed: (1) The diagnosis and medication side effects of participants had significant differences in recovery and quality of life. (2) A significant positive correlation between recovery and quality of life for people with mental disorders living in the community. (3) Participants’ recovery stage in stage 3 (living with disability), and stage 4 (living beyond disability) that quality of life was significant better than stage 1 (overwhelmed by the disability) and stage 2 (struggling with disability). (4) The recovery score of people with mental disorders living in the community can predict current quality of life.
According to the study shows that mental disorders living in the community have a better recovery status and good quality of life are closely related. Therefore, community rehabilitation agencies can use recovery programs, so that the degree of recovery of gradually increased, indirectly improve and enhance their quality of life.
