The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among shame, pho-phi-kat, and self-esteem in adolescents, and to examine the moderatoring role of self-esteem in the relationship between shame and pho-phi-kat. The participants consisted of 597 adolescents (287 boys and 310 girls) from 9 junior high schools in Hsinchu area. The collected data were analyzed by the descriptive statistics, t-test, product-moment correlation, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression respectively. The main findings were as followed:(1)Gelotophobia and gelotophilia of adolescents scored between 2.0 and 2.5(borderline), and katagelasticism of adolescents scored between 1.0 and 2.0(no katagelasticism).(2)Boys were significantly more katagelasticism than girls in this sample of adolescents. Boys were significantly less shame than girls in this sample of adolescents.(3)Hierarchical regression analysis showed that self-esteem doesn’t moderate the link between shame and pho-phi-kat in adolescents.
