Mothering across borders and cultures represent tremendous challenges concerning life transitions and identity development for many women and children, especially when children reaching school age. This study aims to explore the experience of Indonesian mothers’ mothering work for their school age children. It tries to assemble mothers’ daily life and experiences as primary caregivers and helpers for their children’s schooling. The inquiry approach of this study is grounded in institutional ethnography (IE), which employs interviews and textual analysis in its investigation. Twelve (12) Indonesian mothers whose children are studying in Taiwan school were interviewed.
The findings of this study are : (1) Learning Mandarin and doing homework are not the important concern ofmothers due to their limitation to the language and thought of usage for the future; (2) Mothers do not have high expectation in their children’s schooling because they know that this is just a temporary process in order to get the certificate of school-attendance;(3) Mothers require their children to maintain their religious discipline when they go to school; (4) Fathers pay more attention to the children, including helping homework and share more of the domestic work at home; (5) Mothers do not have any social interaction with other Taiwanese mothers at school.
