Many studies have been conducted to build integrated models of process selection to achieve optimal level of quality improvement. However, most of the production-quality models in those studies assume that the demand is exogeneous and is not affected by either the price or the quality of the product. For resolving the problem of the joint decision on finance and quality, this study proposed an optimization model on parameter selection in a multi-stage manufacturing process for profit maximization when the demand of the product in the market depends on both the unit sale price and the product quality.
A linear market demand function and a nonlinear programming model have been formulated to solve the decision problem, and a real-world case related to yarn production in textile industry has been thoroughly analyzed and discussed. The integration of the demand function onto the parameter selection model has improved the existing model by making better decisions in parameter selection. In particular, the parameter settings of the extended model will be tightened or relaxed depending on whether the demand is sensitive to the product price and product quality. The results of this research could be useful to companies that are interested in planning their manufacturing systems to achieve optimal quality level and at the same time generate remarkable financial return.
