Guoyue has been developed in Taiwan for more than 60 years. Because of influence from political, cultural, and social circumstances in Taiwan, Guoyue subsequently evolved into a unique form of music with a specific ideology. Many composers have reflected cultural subjectivity in Taiwan by using local elements as musical materials, which has underpinned the cultural identity and value of Guoyue. Su Wen-Cheng(1958-)is one of the most important composers in Taiwan. He makes great contributions in Guoyue compositions, which include solo music, ensemble repertoires, Chinese chamber music, concertos and so on. Furthermore, his composition reveals the spirit of local consciousness, which creates his distinctive personal style of music. This paper analyzes Su’s life, compositions and compositional practices to explicate his dynamic creation processes and deconstruct the concrete and abstract concepts behind his works. Data collection, fieldwork, and musical analysis (all of which are applied in ethnomusicology research) were conducted to investigate the development of Guoyue in Taiwan from individual, musical, and social perspectives. The findings of this study could inform future research on the development of Guoyue in Taiwan.
