In this paper, a series of systematic SPR measurement experiments were carried out using SPR fiber sensor with silver film instead of traditional gold film structure. The experimental results show that the sensitivity of the 50 nm silver film SPR sensor is 30% higher than that of the traditional 40 nm gold film SPR sensor. In the refraction oil sensing with the same refractive index of 1.30, the shortest wavelength of the SPR resonance absorption center of the silver film sensor falls near 490 nm, which is much smaller than the wavelength of the results of the gold film experiment at 600 nm. The 50 nm silver film SPR sensor can be used for large refractive index sensing, especially for the study of the precise chemical composition of oily liquid oils (refractive index> 1.40).
In this paper, we also propose a bimetallic structure of gold/silver and silver/gold SPR sensor, in different refractive index of refraction oil SPR sensing. The results show that the gold / silver bimetallic SPR fiber sensor SPR sensitivity is better than the result of the single layer of gold film structure with the sensitivity improvment to achieve a 4% effect. Besides, in the 50 nm silver film SPR fiber SPR analysis sensors, the results were shown that the displacement of the wavelength at the SPR resonance absorption dip center increased significantly toward long wavelength (red shift), as an extra nano thickness gold thin film was coated on the silver film surface. We especially recommend that the SPR fiber sensor with the silver thin film can be used in the applications of the nano gold thin film deposition monitoring.
