Cultural Appropriation has been the latest hot topic on the mainstream these past three years. Although it was defined as being inspired from other cultures, it experienced a rough turn in several domains such as art, music and fashion.
The latter is possibly the industry where novelty is key. Therefore, Cultural Appropriation in the American fashion industry became a real issue among professionals and public who debates on the border line between the appropriation and appreciation of a culture that is not yours. Is it appropriate to wear a kimono if you are not Japanese? Is it appropriate to wear dread- locks hairstyle if you don’t have African roots?
The aims of this study are first to analyze the relation between the dominant culture and minorities, secondly to investigate the response of the pub- lic opinions towards Cultural Appropriation, and finally to demonstrate the potential and suitable possibilities for professionals to appreciate a culture and its elements respectfully while creating the trend of tomorrow.
A qualitative approach was used for this paper by conducting an online interview with American respondents from different ethnicities, in order to clarify the reasons of Cultural Appropriation controversy among the public. This approach was chosen due to its reliability to demonstrate people’s perceptions and behaviors towards a specific topic.
The results of this research are meant to develop understandings of Cultural Appropriation impact on both professionals and public consciousness, as well as invite professionals to consider different approaches in the future, when representing other cultures.
