This study aims to explore how reality and internet affect homosexuals regarding the difference in sexual identity management behavior and relationship with their sexual identity and overall mental heath. In order to investigate above motivations, a total of 251 homosexuals in Taiwan participated in the survey method. They were asked to complete their personal details and questionnaires about identity management strategies in reality and on the internet, as well as the Brief Symptom Rating Scale. The researcher used Statistical Product and Service Solutions 22.0 to test the hypothesis through multivariate analysis of variance, one-way analysis of variance and Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient.
Results show that (a) coming out is a process that most of participants would experience and the most difficult time is to come out to families, (b) most of participants have androgynous gender qualities, (c) participants are more likely to have covering, passing, implicit and explicit behaviors on the internet than in reality, (d) no matter in reality or on the internet, participants who have more covering and passing behaviors would have lower sexual identity, in contrast, the ones using more implicit and explicit measures have higher sexual identity, (e) Sex, gender identity and intimate family relationships affect participants’ mental health significantly and (f) the higher sexual identity, the better well-being is. This paper comes to a conclusion and these findings offer suggestions and perspectives to future research and practitioners.
