在現今社會文化普遍鼓吹「瘦即是美」的審美觀,對於在肥胖問題日益嚴重的台灣,尤其是女性,體態是否影響著勞動市場表現,是值得去注意的問題。本研究的資料來源為「台灣高等教育資料庫」 (Taiwan Higher Education Data System),利用2006年畢業後一年的女性大學畢業生統計資料,使用Heckman Two-Stage模型方法進行估計,將體態變數包括身高、體重、BMI (Body Mass Index)以及自認體型等之影響效果進行詳盡分析。實證結果發現,第一階段的Probit模型中,身高與體重明顯影響畢業後初職女性的就業機率,身高為正相關,體重為負相關,自認體型在控制身高與體重變數後,自認胖者為正相關,自認瘦者不顯著。而在第二階段薪資迴歸模型中,身高對薪資有顯著正向影響力,體重在控制身高後呈現顯著負向影響,BMI雖然為顯著負向影響,但在輕微過重範圍內無明顯負向效果。自認體型標準者薪資較自認胖者和自認瘦者高,經過交叉分析後,發現女性在實際標準BMI範圍內,卻容易認為自己過胖,顯示社會文化確實存在著偏好纖細體態的現象。
Even “skinny is beautiful” is a common perception of beauty in Taiwan, the obesity problem, especially for women, is still nonnegligible. Whether body shape affects labor market performance for women is a problem worthy of attention. The purpose of this thesis is to empirically examine this issue based on the data drawn from the 2006 “Taiwan Higher Education Data System.” The dataset includes female university graduates one year after graduation. This study applied the Heckman Two-Stage estimation method. The impacts of body shape variables including height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), self-perceived body type, and so on were analyzed in detail. Empirical results show that in the first-stage Probit model, height and weight significantly affected the employment ratio of women working for the first time after graduation. Height had a positive effect, and weight had a negative effect on the employment probability. In view of the self-perceived body type, after controlling the height and weight variables, those who perceived themselves as “fat” had a positive effect, while those who perceived themselves as “skinny” had no significant effect on the employment probability. In the second-stage monthly salary regression model, height had a significantly positive impact on monthly salary, and weight after controlling height had a significantly negative impact. Although BMI had a significantly negative impact, there was no obvious negative effect within the range of “slightly overweight”. Those who perceived themselves as having a “standard body type” had a higher monthly salary compared to those who perceived themselves as fat and skinny. Based on the cross-analysis results, it was found that the women within the range of the actual standard BMI tended to consider themselves as overweighted, indicating that social culture indeed has a preference for slim bodies.
