The objective of this study was to gain an understanding of the management and strategies for Taitung County elementary school recorder ensembles through an investigation into the aspects of ensemble management, management difficulties, and resolution strategies. Recorder ensembles from three elementary schools in Taitung County were selected as case studies through purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with ensemble directors and administrators at the three schools, and along with the collection of related documentation from each school as well as on-site observation and recording, data triangulation was conducted to confirm the fullness and accuracy of the results. Conclusions reached: 1. The ensemble management at each of the schools was in good order. The management concept directors held to was focused on the students’ acquisition of playing technique and helping students experientially understanding the significance of participating in a recorder ensemble. 2. The difficulties faced by the ensembles were: insufficient periodic trainings for the directors, causing them to be unable to enhance their professional capacity; ensembles being limited to short-term practice due to low hourly pay rates for external teachers; and lower levels of motivation in students as a result of lengthy practice sessions. 3. Resolutions found for these difficulties were: allowing directors to attend training courses outside of Taitung County so as to have exchanges with other recorder ensemble directors; encouraging administrators to find more funding to increase external teacher hourly-pay rates, which in turn will increase the efficiency of students’ practice; and boosting student motivation through objective-oriented instruction. In addition, the author has proposed suggestions based on the above findings as a reference that may be used to enhance recorder ensemble education.
