Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) is the main force of economic growth in Taiwan, the machine tool industry is especially successful. In 2017, Taiwan machine tool industry ranked top four in the world, showing the importance of Taiwan machine tool industry in the current global market. Along with the trend of global economic liberalization, industrial globalization, and technology that change the business models, and it also adjusts the formation of corporate organization. Most of the machine tool industries in the world are large-scale enterprises. SME is challenged on how to sustain the operation when facing the competition of both foreign and domestic large-scale enterprise high-end products and the low-price competition from China. In recent years, domestic manufacturers have merged many smaller local machinery factories, which integrate the machinery expertise area they were lacking and to expend the new product line. Reaching the goal to achieve export planning and increase its competitiveness via merger and acquisitions. This study is focusing on Sustainable Operation of Small and Medium Enterprises: A Case Study of a Machine Tool Manufacturer. Through analysis and interviews the main study subject, Company A, to further explore how sustainable operation of small and medium enterprises in the machine tool industry.
