Cupping therapy, a noninvasive treatment in traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to reduce pain. We noticed that Michael Phelps, an Olympic swimmer, had cupping marks on his shoulder which attracted our attention of cupping effect on athletes. Till now, there is limited information regarding the effect of dry cupping therapy on fatigue recovery after exercise. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of cupping therapy on the blood concentration of inflammatory biomarkers and fatigue recovery in elite athletes. We recruited ten male table tennis players to perform 2-day experiment. The participants received rest only or given dry cupping therapy on a different day after 1-h table tennis exercise. Two times experiment with one month interval. The blood specimen and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scales were collected at pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, 5 min and 30 min after completion of cupping treatment. The complete blood count was measured by hematology analyzer, and the concentrations of creatine kinase and blood urea nitrogen were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data were analyzed by paired t-test and repeated measures ANOVA. The results indicated that the number of white blood cells, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, platelet/lymphocyte ratio and the concentration of blood urea nitrogen were significantly decreased after dry cupping treatment. The RPE scales were also significantly decreased through dry cupping. We suggest that dry cupping therapy should improve the recovery that systemic inflammatory and fatigue to athletes following exercise.
