The purpose of the thesis was to investigate a contemporary composer Chang Yungchin’s musical works on Chinese musical instrument, Liuqin. His work included the Rain, Night, and Flower. Rain was the first musical work that started a series of Taiwanese style music. The material contained two classic folk songs, The Sky Is Dark and Northwest Rain. Night was adopted from Song of the Baby Song. Night Rain in the Harbor City was similar to the mood. In Looking Forward to Your Return, the classic song was related to the night. Flower was composed with many popular folk songs from all over Taiwan. From the research results, we were able to understand the musical structures used by the composer. Rain was a Sonata Form, Night was a combination of Compound Ternary Form, and Flower used the Rondo Form. By using the melodies of folk songs in variation and special performance techniques to increase the difficulty of playing, the composer achieved the highest level of Liuqin playing skills. The composer demonstrated the significance and value of Taiwanese culture through the language and aesthetics of Liuqin. From the perspective of the performer, the composer deeply analyzed how he expressed his feelings about Taiwanese culture through his creative techniques. The techniques show three aspects of personal philosophy-the work itself, the interpretation of the performance, and the composer’s concepts and attitudes towards the traditional music material. This study also allowed the author who grew up in Taiwan to understand the “source” of Formosa and the “beauty” of humanity.
