“Clouds and Flowers Fantasia” was composed in 2013. The Pipa Concerto which was inspired by the poems “Three tunes of Qingping” of Bai Li in 2013 was composed by Dan-hong Wang. The Concerto has an elegant and graceful flow from time to time. It shows passionate worship, emotional richness, and delicacy sometimes. The melody is beautiful, aesthetics, feminine, and agile. Moreover, it keeps dancing rhythm with ups and downs, yet sometimes sobbing as a complaint, or showing deep affection in a fluent way. This piece of Pipa music has a strong implications of poetry. “Qilian Rhapsody” was composed in 1995. It was a Pipa and symphony orchestra concerto composed by Lankui Han in the theme of Qilian Mountain in China. The music is full of traditional style and with strong local music identity. In this research, the author studies two Pipa instrumental pieces. The thesis contains chapters of introduction, music background, music analysis, interpretation of music, and the conclusions. The study investigates composition concept, musical structure, playing skills, the application of fingering, and interpretation of the overall artistic conception. Both pieces are traditional in style, but at the same time they retain some modern techniques. Moreover, the composers try to innovate and modernize based on the foundation of traditional style. Through this research, the author expects to reach a deeper understanding of these two pieces based on the original concept of composition.
