Over the past decades, the importance of small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) has been stressed in various researches as SMEs are always the backbone to the global economy. According to (OECD, 2018), SMEs cover a majority of business population, provide job opportunities, and increase value added in production process. In emerging and developing countries, SMEs also generate greater than one third of GDP for the economy growth. Some nations provide the incentives, e.g. the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and The Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) in USA, to support the growth of SMEs. In addition, scholars explore different issues and problems met by SMEs in the past decades. Though the studies in SMEs have been growing at a rapid rate, a comprehensive review on the topic still leaves room for further exploration. In this study, we aim to solve this problem via observing the main themes in the knowledge trajectory of SMEs studies and further identify the new trend of critical SME management issues.

The methods applied in this study include main path analysis and VOS clustering. We collect publication data about SME studies published under Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) journals from Web of Science. We build up relevant keyword query by searching with titles containing SMEs (including micro-enterprises) and its synonyms to construct out dataset. The dataset includes 5,394 articles for the period from 1938 to 2019. Main path analysis is used to find out the trajectory of SME knowledge network, whereas VOS clustering helps to identify the meaningful research themes in the past 82 years.

Based on the data, the number of published papers increased in six folds up to 5,394, mostly from UK (15.89%) and US (14.72%), in the two recent decades. The results of main path analysis showed that the research focuses have been moving from the dynamics of SME development to SME’s business sustainability. Moreover, the VOS clustering identifies eight distinguished groups. These topics include (i) “SME Strategy and Innovation”, (ii) “SME Finance”, (iii) “SME Policies”, (iv) “Information and Knowledge Management (IM & KM) in SMEs”, (v) “SME Business Ethics and Sustainability”, (vi) “Micro and Small Businesses”, (vii) “Operation Management in SMEs” and (viii) “Work Environment (Occupational Health & Safety) in SMEs”. Besides, business strategies and innovations are the two main research themes that SME scholars focused on. By further extension of main path analysis, we also found that in the recent years, sustainability and innovation concepts have been incorporated on multiple dimensions in different research subjects in which the studies figure out innovative products and strategies to foster sustainable development.

As a summary of the main path of knowledge trajectory on SMEs, this paper provides an in-depth understanding of SME studies over the last century and serve as an indispensable premise for further studies, strategies and policies.
