Background and purpose: Past researches have pointed out that if individuals can use coping strategies flexibly then they will help alleviate the effects of stress. However, to the authors best knowledge, very few publications can be found available in the literature that discuss the issue of what will cause people who have less coping flexibility have lower depression tendency. This study believes that the key causes people who have high depression tendency is the ability of the people whom inability to use coping flexibility to evaluate the situation. Therefore, this study attempts to use the dual-process model of coping with the depression proposed by Kato (2012) to understand how explanatory flexibility impact of coping flexibility to the depression tendency. Therefore, this study attempts to explain the depressed college students from the perspective of mediation and regulation respectively, and its impact on the coping dual-course process.
Research method: This study adopts a cross-cutting research design. A total of 96 college students aged 18 to 24 were collected, and basic information, interpretation style, flexibility and diversity rating scale, coping flexibility scale, and depression scale were filled in order.
Research results: Through the mediation analysis, it was found that no mediation to the coping flexibility and explanatory flexibility to the depression tendency. In addition, the result of regression analysis show that explanatory flexibility moderates the relationship between coping flexibility and depression tendency. it is shown that when people who have higher explanatory flexibility, can have a protective effect on the negative impact on low coping flexibility on the depression tendency. In addition to providing concrete research evidence on the relationship between the explanatory flexibility, coping flexibility and depression tendency, this study further illustrates the importance of improving explanatory flexibility to reduce the depression tendency of those with low coping flexibility.
