On 14 August 1947, India gained its independence from the rule of British government. But before conceding the independence to India, the British government had conveniently divided the country into two; namely, Pakistan, most of its citizens are Muslims, and India, the majority of the people are Hindus. The partition left millions of people homeless; and caused death for lots of people; violence and religious hatred happened everywhere. Khushwant Singh’s novel Train to Pakistan recorded and depicted the horrific consequences of Partition. There is no doubt that as an Indian, Khushwant Singh appropriated the concept of trinity embedded in Hindu theory to develop his characters as seen in the transformation of the protagonist Juggut Singh from a “budmash” to a hero. The development of other characters like Iqbal Singh and Hukum Chand could also be viewed in this way.
This thesis comprises of four chapters that provide the plot as well as the social-historical context when the story happened, and a brief introduction to Hinduism, Sikhism, and Islam as well as the Hindu notion of trinity (Trimurti). Three major characters and their correspondences to three major Gods (Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer) of Hindu religion are explored.The last chapter would also analyze the implications of Hinduism in Juggut Singh’s journey to become a hero in the story.
