封面是書籍外觀的主要硬體構造，除了保護之外，也代表了書的形象。封面不僅體現了一本書的內容和性質，在視覺上第一時間給予印象，增加書籍的視覺美觀性。為深入的回溯書封設計之歷史潮流與元素演變，本研究透過了解西方書籍封面設計，並針對英國企鵝出版社於1970年至2019年出版之經典文學系列書籍類型作為主要對象，透過文獻蒐集與資料分析、探討企鵝出版社獨特的設計文化和書封設計、目的與書封設計所需具備的原則與條件，利用執行焦點團體法和內容分析法研究書籍封面設計作品中元素的比例與趨勢，搭配個案研究多方探究書封設計和年代流行背景等應用面向，以提供往後的研究者更完善的參照對象和延伸研究的面向。
研究者通過此研究之文獻分析和方法操作，回顧企鵝出版社近50年間書籍封面設計元素的變化，發現除了字體和色彩構面之外，各個類目百分比皆在1970年開始緩慢的成長。於1980年代時開始向下發展，在1990至2000年之間降到最低點。之後才在2009年逐步回升。字體和表現方式類目於50年之間的變動最為明顯，字體在1990~2009年之間開始在書封設計應用中做出改變，使書封以字體做出設計上更豐富的視覺樣貌；表現方式則在2000年時以攝影取代了原有佔比最高的插畫，反應出千禧年後攝影器材和技術的普遍及流行，以及電腦影像編排所帶來的便利性。驗證了不同時代中的書封的視覺圖像在文本功能上，並非只存在於傳遞書籍內容的訊息和概念，更是觀者在接收和解碼時，針對了解書籍封面圖像所詮釋的意涵和生活文化。

This research aims at analysing the design features of Penguin Books Publisher classic literature book covers from 1970 to 2019. Through concentrating on the trends of book cover design in 5 different decades, the focus group interview, content analysis and case study are used as the primary methodologies. This study is focused on refining the essentiality of the book cover design development, and comparing the significant changes and impacts of design elements in over 479 samples with the data of content analysis. The case study of 20 versions of Nineteen Eighty-four by George Orwell discussion and reviews can help emphasis and explain the application of design elements in various time and background.

According to the compiling of results and cases, the comprehensive analysis is presented in tables and diagrams, which assists in describing the alteration and transformation of design elements in 50 years. The type font and performance category have an important change during the 1990s and 2000s. Therefore, from a cultural perspective, the result is verified that the design elements composed visual images that book covers in the different era are not only in the function of conveying the information and concepts but more on the viewers' interpretation and culture background. Finally, the researcher expects this investigation offers the details and information of trending and book cover design from Penguin Publisher House 1970 to 2019 can bring out further research intention and the inspiration of conception.
