This study distinguishes the differences in terms of linguistic features between native English and non-native English translators by examining a translation tendency adopted by Mandarin Chinese translators in a literary translation. By applying Peter Newmark’s theory and procedure in connection with Dong and Lan’s study, a comparison and contrast is made between the translation of this study and a prior translation. The present translation undertaken by a non-native English-speaking translator is compared with the prior translation by Howard Goldblatt, a native English-speaking translator. The differences demonstrated in this study reflect that Goldblatt applied the semantic approach and tended to translate long Mandarin Chinese sentences into long compound-complex sentences. In contrast, the translation for the purposes of this study adopted the communicative approach, in which there is a preference for rendering long Mandarin Chinese sentences into short and simple ones that should be easier to understand. In examining these two different translation approaches, this study demonstrates the evident advantages and disadvantages of both approaches, as well as indicating the significant differences between native and non-native English translators of a Taiwanese literature work. It is evident that a non-native English translator demonstrates a tendency to include three distinctive linguistic features in the literary translation while applying the communicative approach. Despite how this study translation rearranged the sentence order to formulate an easy-to-read TT text, syntax analysis reveals how there is a distinctive connection between non-native English translators and their first language. The textual analysis presents how different two translators render the literary text in terms of dictions, Taiwanese fixed expressions, Chinese idiomatic expressions, and a pet phrase. This study could constitute a useful precedent for further exploring inherent linguistic habits within translations rendered by non-native English translators, as well as providing these translators with a clearer view of their translation patterns. These linguistic habits serve as effective indicators for these translators to distinguish their translation patterns from native English translators, making their translations comprehensible, coherent, and accurate.
