This research used the moving sun as a theme for concrete and abstract oil paintings. The writer adopted a document analysis approach for the following research directions: (1) sunlight and the sun’s colors, and (2) the history and culture of the Cao Gong Irrigation System. The findings were used as the basis of her creative work for this study. The writer not only applied a stylistic analysis to the works of several artists, but also learned from their skills and stylistic features. After a long-term observation of the scenery in the area of the Cao Gong Irrigation System and the changes of the sun at different times of the day, a series of oil paintings themed “the moving sun” was produced. In the first step, the writer sketched pictures with the sun in the same scene at different times of the day. Next, several paintings were created through collage. The writer also transformed her creative concept and the scenery she had seen, into geometric shapes on canvas. Finally, colors were added to finish the journey of her oil painting creations from concrete to abstract, depicting the changes of the sun and the scenery’s beauty. To present her research and artistic creation based on the sun and the Cao Gong Irrigation System, the writer divided the research theme into three parts: (1) “the Moving Sun,” in which a series of sun-themed paintings reflects her thoughts towards life through observing the sunset. (2) “The Beauty of the Cao Gong Irrigation System,” in which the irrigation system’s water flow is symbolized by simple lines and the alternation of cold and warm colors mirrors the writer’s great adoration of the area. (3) “The Tales of Birds,” in which geometric shapes are used to present the writer’s observation of birds.
