Most insights form research literature on creativity, scholars generally agree with the
benefits of creativity, and for creative workers, important interpersonal relationships
in the field of work contribute to their creative output. Many scholars in the field of
creativity mostly advocate a positive perspective on the connection between creativity
and interpersonal relationships, still it is interesting to find out that from historical
data or biographies of creative people that those engaged in creative work may
damage their interpersonal relationships due to certain factors. However, the impact of
family relationships on creative workers is not inferior to that of workplace, therefore
it is worthy of further discussion; nevertheless, there are still few research literatures
on the relationship between creative workers and family. Against this background, the
purpose of this study is to respond to this gap by exploring how creative workers
respond to work-family boundaries.
This study adopts a case study method to conduct a semi-structured in-depth interview
with two creative workers and one of their spouses. After collating the textual analysis
results of the verbatim interview reviews, there are three main findings from this study.
First, creative workers enjoy loneliness. When thinking at home, a familiar and safe
environment is a suitable field. When immersed in thinking, they tend to avoid other
interference. Being unable to concentrate on coping with requirements from families
may lead to spouse dissatisfaction and cause conflicts, while reducing conflicts relies
on tacit understanding between husbands and wives. Second, the spouses of creative
workers play an important role in maintaining family relationships. The working
characteristics and mood of creative workers is difficult for ordinary to understand,
and it is easy to be misunderstood that they are too paranoid. If the spouses can
understand the circumstances and knowing that they have reached a certain level of
tacit communication, and convey identity to creative workers to maintain family
relationship at this time, it is helpful to reduce the situation of work-family conflicts.
Third, on the way back home, creative workers can enjoy themselves and gain
resources by diverting their attention and being in independent space. The emotional
needs from spouses and families after returning home will be satisfied and
relationships will be maintained through the high participation of physical boundaries
iv
and Low-level connections in the psychological boundaries. But creative workers still
need to get resources from family relationships, because the familiarity and identity
that families bring to them is shaped as a sense of psychological security, and what
they need is an environment of companionship and solitude.
In conclusion, this study expands my understanding of what encounters creative
workers in crossing the boundaries of work and family. Meanwhile, it further explores
the relationship between creative workers and their families, and how family members
can create a more conducive home environment for both parties by understanding the
characteristics of creative workers.
