The study aims to explore how the language acts of illocutionary verbs are translated into Chinese. Four versions of Chinese translation of Oscar Wilde The Picture of Dorian Gray are examined from pragmatic perspectives. The research employs John R. Searle’s (1976) classification of five types of illocutions: assertives, directives, commissives, expressives and declarations in the main part. Three research questions are asked in the study. First, how are the illocutionary verbs in these four novels translated into Chinese? To what extent are the illocutionary forces achieved? Second, what translation strategies have been adopted to convey the language force? Third, which type of illocutionary verbs is more difficult in Chinese translation? Firstly, the findings show that when rendering the illocutionary verbs, a translator should pay more attention to reproducing the illocutionary force and make readership understand clearly. Secondly, there are five translation strategies from the frequent use to the least are literal translation, free translation, addition, deletion, and domestication. Lastly, the type of expressives is the most difficult illocutionary verbs in Chinese translation. We suggest that a translator interpret the illocutionary component encoded in the illocutionary verbs from a pragmatic perspective and selects proper illocutionary verbs to transcribe the speech-act representation.
Key words: illocutionary verb, illocutionary force, speech-act, Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
