Even though the mixture of Christian and fantastical or pagan elements have been existing for centuries in works which communicate Christian spirit – such as the epic Beowulf, Dante’s The Divine Comedy, church architectures, medieval illuminated manuscripts, and even the text found in the Holy Bible – the debate whether fantasy literature is a genre appropriate for Christians to enjoy is still ongoing today. One series which is often debated is J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, which belongs to her Wizarding World franchise. While a number of Christians accuse the saga of promoting witchcraft, scholars have also found that the novels bear many Christian imagery and aspects. On the other hand, the other series in the franchise, Fantastic Beasts (which is not yet finished since it has just premiered in 2016), has not been much researched. Inspired by this, the present study aims to unearth the Christian elements in the saga as a spin-off of Harry Potter. Three out of the four analysed major characters in the series – Dumbledore, Grindelwald, Newt, and Jacob – are very comparable with characters from Beowulf, and all four of them allude to at least one Biblical figure each. In addition, three significant incidents from the series were explored: Queenie seduced by Grindelwald, the New Salem Philanthropic Society, and the rain of obliviation. One of them is in parallel with John Milton’s Paradise Lost, another with Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables: A Romance, and all of the three bear similarities with episodes from the Holy Bible. Therefore, this research concludes that the Fantastic Beasts saga communicates Christian ideas to its viewers while featuring fantastical elements such as wizards and mythical creatures.
