To effectively conduct cross-cultural design cooperation, there are four issues urgently required to be faced: How to overcome the cultural barrier in a cross-cultural design team? How to sustain the competitive advantage in a highly competitive design career? How to measure the abstract cross-cultural ability? How to balance cooperation and competition in a design team? Theoretical research surrounding these issues are limited, leaving a gap to be filled. To fill the theoretical gap, this study conducts a research on the cultural intelligence (or CQ as a shorthand label) and career competitive advantage of college students majored in design. Research samples are targeted at design students in Taiwan universities; research subjects are targeted at CQ and career competitive advantage. There are four research goals: (1) Test the adaptability of Cultural Intelligence Scale on design students; (2) Find the differentiation of design students’ CQ; (3) Explore the correlations between CQ and career competitive advantages; (4) Clarify the predicting effect of CQ on career competitive advantages.
To achieve the listed research goals, this study firstly raises 12 research hypothesis based on both CQ theories and competitive advantage theories; next, this study designs the questionnaire with variables extracted from hypothesis and delivers the questionnaire; finally, this study collects data and tests the hypothesis based on a statistical software. Research tools are literature, expert validity, Internet, questionnaire, and statistical software; data collecting methods are expert interview and questionnaire survey; data analysis methods are factor analysis, correlation analysis, independent T-test, one-way ANOVA, and step-wise multiple regression.
The results of this study are listed below: (1) CQ is adaptable to measure design students’ CQ; (2) Education level has a significant effect on two dimensions of CQ (both cognitive and motivational CQs); meanwhile, none of gender, age or design field has a significant effect on the four dimensions of CQ; (3) Four dimensions of CQ all have significant correlations with career competitive advantages; motivational CQ correlates the most with career competitive advantages, while cognitive CQ correlates the least; (4) Three dimensions of CQ (metacognitive, motivational and behavioral CQs) could predict career competitive advantages, and the predicting effect could be calculated through an equation (key career competitive advantage = 0.368 × motivational CQ + 0.277 × metacognitive CQ + 0.177 × behavioral CQ).
The contributions of this study are listed below: (1) Fill the theoretical gap of CQ theory on design education; (2) Promote the application of CQ theory on both design education and design teamwork management.
