In recent years, Taiwan has many natural disasters due to the influence of climate change and its special geographical environment. However, factors such as typhoons, torrential rains and heavy rainfall have caused natural disasters. Because of economic development and social change, land is exploited one after another. The watergate is an important facility for flood control projects, which has the functions of flood control and drainage, avoid the loss of people’s lives and property due to the ingress of external water. In this study, it directs at watergates in drainage system of Wu River in Nantou County, including Wu River, Maoluo River, Changping River, Ailiao River, Nangang River and Mei River. The total of watergates is 114. The differences of watergates in setup conditions, types and functions, so systematically classified management will be implemented to improve efficiency and protection of watergates. In order to systematically classify the watergates that different factors, such as population density, geographic location, facility condition, material and type, etc. were used. Therefore, this study further takes the relevant factors and data of watergates into account to improve the effectiveness evaluation of watergate management. Finally, factors of systematically classified management can be analyzed to discuss the issues of watergates by the data of research. Through the comprehensive investigation of this study, the grading results of 12 gates are listed as high warning, 57 gates are listed as moderate warning and 45 gates are listed as low warning. High warning watergates, most of which are the water level outside the gate is higher than the internal water level. That is to say, their drainage is not easy and large amounts of earth and stone are deposited when flood subsides. Moreover, equipment maintenance frequency is high and it’s situated at the flooded location.It is suggested to add pumping station (pumping machine) to support drainage, rectify rivers, improve watergate channels and maintain watergate equipments. Finally, the purpose of flood control, drainage and disaster reduction can be effectively achieved.
