Background: With the advancement of science and technology, the functions of smartphones have increased greatly, and it has gradually become an indispensable thing in life, which has affected the lifestyle seriously. However, smartphone radiation and use behavior have irreversible consequences for health, even increase the risk of breast cancer. Because chemotherapy is the most effective therapeutic to treat breast cancer, but the most common and fatal side effect of leukopenia.
Aims: This dissertation comprises of three sub-studies. Sub-study one: to deeply explore the impact of radiofrequency radiation emitted by smartphones on the incidence of breast cancer. Sub-study two: the behavior for smartphone use of Taiwanese women and the risk of breast cancer. Sub-study three: to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture relieving chemotherapy-induced leukopenia in patients with breast cancer.
Methods: Sub-study one, detecting radiofrequency radiation emitted by smartphones and the incidence of breast cancer by systematic literature review and meta-analysis. The second sub-study is a case-control study, using the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (CPSQI) and the Smartphone Addiction Inventory Short Form (SPAI-SF) to assess the factors related to sleep patterns, smartphone addiction, the behavior of smartphone use, and the incidence of breast cancer. Sub-study three, a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of acupuncture for chemotherapy-induced leukopenia in breast cancer patients.
Results: Sub-study one, there is a significant correlation between exposure to radiofrequency radiation and the incidence of breast cancer. Further, subgroup analysis showed that age ≥50 years old, and exposure to mobile phone significantly increased the incidence of breast cancer. Sub-study two: Compared with non-addicts, smartphone addicts have a significantly increased risk of breast cancer by 1.43-fold. Those who are accustomed to using a smartphone for more than 4.5 minutes before going to bed have a significantly increased risk of breast cancer by 5.27-fold compared with those who are less than or equal to 4.5 minutes. In addition, using the smart phone posture: using the phone with the head down compared to putting the phone on the table, the risk of breast cancer is significantly increased by 1.59-fold. In the carrying way of smartphones: Compared with carrying it below the waist, the risk of breast cancer in the chest or waist and abdomen is significantly increased by 5.03 times and 4.06 times, respectively. Moreover, the combination of smartphone addiction and use of smartphone >4.5 min before bedtime synergistically increased the breast cancer risk. Sub-study three, after a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis, found out that acupuncture can improve chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression in breast cancer patients, with a significant increase in white blood cells. In addition, subgroup analysis revealed, no matter what acupuncture manners be applied, white blood cells can be significantly improved.
Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between exposure to radiofrequency radiation and the incidence of breast cancer, among which age ≥50 years old and exposures to smartphones. The closer distances between the smartphone and the breasts when carrying or using smartphones, those who use smartphones massively, and those who are used to using smartphones more than 4.5 minutes before night sleep have a higher risk of breast cancer. Therefore, acupuncture can relieve leukopenia caused by chemotherapy of breast cancer, and the white blood cells can be improved significantly.
