Purpose: The balance between work and rest is an issue of great importance in today's society. When work-related matters are always linked through information and communication technology into the non-work life, the possible effects of the blurred work and personal life are yet to be explored. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the impact of technostress on healthcare practitioners and to understand its association with recovery experiences and emotional exhaustion.
Method: Four medical institutions in a southern health care system were used as the study site, and practitioners who had been employed in the institutions for three months or more were used as the study subjects. A structured questionnaire was used as a cross-sectional survey instrument. A total of 582 questionnaires were sent out during the study period from November 2021 to March 2022, and after excluding invalid questionnaires, 541 valid questionnaires were collected, with a valid questionnaire return rate of 92.96%. The study was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Research Board of the health system (IRB No. KMHIRB-E(I)-202100192)
Result: The sample of this study was predominantly female (80.8%), the age distribution was mostly 25-35 years old (37.0%), the total working experience was mostly 6-10 years (24.0%), the marital status was mostly married (52.7%), and those without family support were mostly children (52.7%) and elders (49.4%). The mean score of technostress was 2.93, the mean score of emotional exhaustion was 2.96, the mean score of recovery experience was 3.66 for " Experiencing Control ", 3.64 for " Relaxation ", 3.16 for " Psychological Detachment ", and 3.28 for " Mastery Experience ". The multivariate linear multiple regression analysis revealed that both technological stress and recovery experience showed statistically significant effects on emotional exhaustion, and technological stress could further influence the degree of emotional exhaustion through the mediating effect of recovery experience.
Conclusion: Technostress in health care providers affects the degree of emotional exhaustion through a partially mediated effect of recovery experience, but not through mastery experience. This study proposes relevant research on management practices and theories.
