This study investigated the influence of impulsivity and decision-making function on heroin use and craving. Participants were recruited through respondent-driven sampling (RDS) from 2016 to 2019. The participants were heroin addicts (HAs; n = 410) and healthy controls (HCs; n = 117). This study employed the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), Cambridge Gambling Task (CGT), visual analogue scale (VAS), and Timeline Followback (TLFB) method to measure impulsivity, decision-making function, craving, and number of heroin use days. For analysis, a t test, logistic regression, Pearson’s correlation, and simple regression were employed. The results revealed that (1) the HAs exhibited higher impulsivity and lower decision-making function than did the HCs, (2) undertreatment and nontreatment revealed no significant differences in impulsivity, decision-making function, craving, or number of use days, and (3) a significant correlation between impulsivity and craving was observed in the HA group. In summary, this study recommends that HAs should strive to improve their coping methods to reduce impulsivity and craving.
