本篇論文的目的是探討厄尼斯特・米勒・海明威《老人與海》的主角聖地牙哥個體化過程。本篇論文是透過容格式分析心理學，剖析聖地牙哥心理狀態及經歷個體化過程中，內心的衝突與平衡，最後完成個體化。本篇論文包括五章。第一章介紹《老人與海》作者背景、故事內容及容格式分析。第二章介紹容格式分析心理學的潛意識、原型及個體化相關理論。第三章探討小說中聖地牙哥原型的呈現方式。第四章分析聖地牙哥如何面對命運和挑戰命運，重新實現自我的個體化過程，達到心靈整合。第五章總結本篇論文，肯定聖地牙哥的毅力，最後心靈趨於平衡。

This thesis explores thechange of psyche and individuation process in Santiago, the protagonist ofErnest Miller Hemingway’s The Old Man andthe Sea. Through the perspective of Jungian psychology, the thesis presentsan analysis of the conflict and balance of inner states of Santiago’s psychologyand the process of Santiago’s individuation, and an explanation of how to reacha whole psyche. I composed the thesis into five chapters. Chapter One is abrief introduction to the author, The OldMan and the Sea and the methodology. Chapter Two illustrates Jungianpsychology, including the unconscious, archetypes and individuation. ChapterThree presents an examination of Santiago’s exhibition of archetypes in thenovella. Chapter Four explains how Santiago faces fate and challenges and how hecompletes the process of individuation to achieve the integration of his psyche.Chapter Five concludes the thesis affirming the perseverance of Santiago inorder to reach a balance of psyche.
