ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the perceptions of their roles and perspectives of
reinforcing marriage for married women in their forties (MW40) and fifties (MW50). To achieve the goal, 405 MW40 and the MW50 were recruited in this study. A questionnaire and interview form were applied to explore the perceptions of their roles and perspectives of reinforcing marriage for the MW40 and theMW50. Specifically, the two groups of subjects’ perceptions to the questions in a five-point scale on the questionnaire were collected and analyzed quantitatively by an independent sample t-test and descriptive statistic. In addition, the subjects’perceptions to open-ended questions were discussed qualitatively. Based on the data analysis, five major findings of the study are concluded as follows:
1. There is no significant difference in the perceptions of roles women may play in
marriage other than a mother and a wife for the MW40 and the MW50.
With more mean scores, the MW40 show more positive perceptions of the roles of a daughter and a carer that women may play in marriage than the MW50. Nevertheless, more MW50 than MW40 agree that the roles women may play in marriage include a lover, a listener, and a collaborator.
2. There are two significant differences in the perceptions of happy marriage for
the MW40 and the MW50. With more mean scores, more MW50 than MW40 agree that couples help each other like friends in a happy marriage. In addition, more MW40 than MW50 agree that the spouses had better share the housework for a happy marriage.
        3. There is a significant difference in the perceptions of unhappy marriage forthe
MW40 and the MW50. With more mean scores, more MW40 than MW50 show more negative perceptions of constant marital conflicts.
4. There are three significant differences in the perceptions of the skills for
emotional management for the MW40 and the MW50. With more mean scores, more MW50 than MW40 are positive in the perceptions of (a) relieving their stress by writing down their feelings, (b) engaging in housework or calligraphy helps reduce their anxiety, (c) examining ways to reduce similar marital conflicts afterwards.
        5. There are three significant differences in the perceptions of the strategies for
improving marital relationship for the MW40 and the MW50. With more mean scores, more MW40 than MW50 possess positive perceptions of physical intimacy to express love, and the behavior of pampering their husbands to foster closeness between couples. On the other hand, more MW50 than MW40 would attentively listen to their husbands and give them timely supports.
Based on the study findings, there are three suggestions for future studies. First,
other than wives and mothers, married women may play the roles like a lover, a daughter, a carer, a listener, and a collaborator. To be specific, playing various roles provides married women with a lot of freedom and flexibility to manage a successful marriage. Second, conflicts are opportunities for couples to communicate and further understand each other. To deal with the problem for couples, a rational discussion is suggested. That is, couples should talk over problems when both sides stop feeling upset. Some strategies for emotional management discussed in Chapter Four can be referred to. Finally, constant physical touch and attentive listening for couples not only express love and respect to each other, but also help reinforce martial relationship.
