The purposes of this study were to explore the transition of self-identity and meaning of life of females through their solo independent travel experiences and how the experiences affect self-identity and the meaning of life. Insight was gained through the journey and restructured women's self-identity and the meaning of life during the trip. This study adopted the method of qualitative research, and with purposive sampling, six females who had solo independent traveling experiences were recruited. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Transcription was analyzed by the method of using a categorical-content perspective of narrative research. The main results were as follows:
(1) Females’ growth experiences and the interaction with the original family is the key motivation for the solo travel experience. The motives for traveling solo seem to have diverse causes, but the similarities among the participants are all focused on settling and gaining peace of mind.
(2) The opportunities that led to the transition of females' self-identity through traveling solo begin with being able to reopen the senses while traveling abroad, which is the external influence on the individual. Having dialogues with oneself frequently and being truthfully self-aware is an internal reflection and change. The factors that cause the transition are the limited time on the journey and the sense of accomplishment gained from fulfilling one’s potential.
(3) The growth of self-identification helps bring about the meaning of life, makes for a more clear purpose for the future, and emphasizes females' existence and feelings, regaining the charge of life and accepting the true self. The most significant change for the female solo travelers from the trip is having a new perspective of life.
Lastly, the results of this study provided suggestions for future research.
