BSW student’s professional identity is considered a desirable educational outcome, which reflects not only how they identify themselves with social work, but their attitude toward choosing social work as a career. Previous literature used to regard professional identity as a continuous concept and linearly correlated to other variables; yet, based on Marcia’s identity status paradigm, this research aimed to identify qualitatively different statuses of BSW student’s professional identity, and also explore their covariates.
The online questionnaire was adopted and distributed to senior BSW students by their course instructors; 495 valid samples from 21 social work departments were recruited in total. With respect to data analysis procedure, this research carried out latent profile analysis in R with ‘tidyLPA’ package, to identify BSW student’s professional identity statuses, and then multi-nominal logistic regression model in SPSS19.0 was used to explore the associations between the professional identity statuses and the covariates, including professional competence, perceived importance of professional competence, intrinsic work values, extrinsic work values, and parental support.
The results suggested five distinct professional identity statuses among BSW students, including achievement, foreclosure, moratorium, diffusion, and negation, which represented different response patterns of their exploration and commitment for social work profession. With regard to covariates, professional competence, intrinsic work values, extrinsic work values, and parental support were associated with BSW student’s professional identity statuses. With all other variables held constant, the more professional competence, intrinsic work values, parental support, and the less extrinsic work values that BSW students perceive, the more likely they are to achieve the social work professional identity during their senior year.
In conclusion, this research suggested that BSW student’s professional identity consist of different combinations of their exploration and commitment toward social work. Future research is therefore encouraged to explore the concept, development, and covariates of professional identity based on Marcia’s identity status paradigm. Other implications in terms of social work education and BSW students were as well discussed in this research.
