The Philippines faces a lot of systematic flaws and problems that make it hard for many to progress financially. which has forced many Filipinos to look for multiple sources of income. The rise of cryptocurrency, blockchain technology and NFTs has introduced the increasing popularity of blockchain games. These blockchain games allowed players to earn cryptocurrency in the form of tokens. This has presented blockchain games as a possible source of income for Filipinos.
This research looks to see if playing blockchain games can be considered as a viable source of income, and to what extent. The daily earning potential of the two most popular blockchain games, Axie Infinity and Splinterlands, will be compared to the daily minimum wage in the Philippines. A multiple-criteria decision-making method will be performed to see which of the two alternatives is a better option for new casual players.
The principal conclusion was that, with the current state of the cryptocurrency market, neither option has the earning potential to be a primary source of income. With an average play time of less than 2 hours, they can be easily considered as secondary income that can be done during one’s free time. While Axie Infinity is better for new players, playing Splinterlands has the potential of earning even more than the daily minimum wage if the player plays in a very high-skill rank where the rewards are significantly bigger.
