In June 2013, the erhu solo The Legend of Marquis Yi of Zeng garnered the top prize at the first Huang Hai-Huai Erhu Awards held by Hubei Chinese Culture Promotion Society. This piece debuted and was played by Yan Guo Wei in October 2013 during the Chinese Golden Bell Award for Music in Hong Kong. The piece was composed by integrating the melody from Hubei folk song Dragon-Boat Melody.
This research is conducted by analyzing and interpreting the erhu solo The Legend of Marquis Yi of Zeng composed by Li Bo-Chan. The research is divided into five chapters. The first chapter, introduction, covers the research motivations and purposes. The second chapter elaborates the educational background and the compositional experiences of the composer. The third chapter is the analyses of this piece, including analyses of the structures, elements, melodies, time signatures, and rhythms. The fourth chapter presents the writer’s interpretation of the piece. The last chapter explores what the composer wants to convey through The Legend of Marquis Yi of Zeng and the techniques he uses in the piece based on the analyses in the previous chapter. Then the research is concluded through discussing the influences this piece has in the development of art of erhu. This research is conducted in the hope to offer a valuable reference to erhuists.
