Behavioral inhibition is considered as the core issue of executive function abnormalities in attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Stroop test is adopted for assessing the ability of interference control regularly. In this study, Numerical Stroop Paradigm was used to explore interference control of children in general and ADHD excluding confounding effects of reading ability. And it also investigated whether there was an interaction between groups, numerical distance, and congruency. Furthermore, event related potential (ERP) will be used to monitor the neuropsychological process for understanding the stimulus reception, interference processing, response organization and execution.
The analysis of N1 component showed that ADHD and general children had a similar history of linking numerical symbolic representation, and there’s no significant differences in behavioral performance like accuracy and response speed. However, the facilitation of congruent situation and interference of incongruent situation in N1 of Children with ADHD were more than general group. It meant children with ADHD was interfered more easily than general group. Therefore, N2 component showed children with ADHD had to devote more effort for inhibiting irrelevant stimulus. In LPC component as known as the process of response organization, children with ADHD devote less effort than general group. In conclusion, neurophysiological analyses revealed that children with ADHD fell behind general group in inhibiting irrelevant stimuli, even though there was no difference in behavioral performance.
