Over the past two years, the global community has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with wearing masks becoming the simplest and most effective preventive measure. The aim of this research was to investigate the language abilities of children within the environment where childcare providers at daycare centers consistently wore masks. The study sought to comprehend the language performance of these children and explore the potential correlation between the duration of children's interactions with mask-wearing childcare providers and their language
proficiency. The study extended invitations to children aged 16 to 18 months,
along with their primary caregivers (e.g., parents), from both public and private daycare centers in Taipei City and New Taipei City. Parents were requested to provide basic information and complete the "Chinese Infant-Toddler Communication Development Scale" (Liu Huimei, Cao Fengming,2010). After excluding data containing gaps, a total of 123 valid sampleswere collected and analyzed using SPSS 25 for Windows. The findings of the research revealed that in environments wherechildcare providers at daycare centers wore masks continuously, an increasedduration of daily interaction between children and mask-wearing caregivers was associated with lower scores in "language usage" and "language expression complexity." These disparities were statistically significant, indicating an adverse influence of caregiver mask-wearing on children's language abilities. Furthermore, the research also highlighted that girls aged 16 to 18 months exhibited superior "vocabulary expression" abilities
compared to boys. Additionally, at 16 months of age, children's percentile rankings in "vocabulary expression," "language usage," and "language expression complexity" were all below the average developmental level for that age range. For children aged 17 and 18 months, their percentile rankings in "vocabulary expression" also lagged behind the average developmental level for those age brackets. Nevertheless, 17-month-old boys demonstrated enhanced "language expression complexity" relative to their peers, while 18 month-old boys showcased superior "language usage" abilities compared to their counterparts. Finally, relevant recommendations are proposed.
