蜜袋鼯是世界上大受歡迎的小型寵物,但在中台灣與健康議題相關的獸醫學文獻數量稀少。若能收集分析常見的疾病比例,可能有助於早期診斷高風險疾病,並協助臨床獸醫師針對寵物蜜袋鼯建構疾病預防照護方針。本研究致力於全面性探討寵物蜜袋鼯臨床疾病統計之數據、疾病比例以及疾病與年紀、性別、季節溫溼度之相關性。本研究統計了台灣中部某私人特殊寵物醫院之蜜袋鼯病例資料,分析收集自2020年1月至2021年12月的門診病例。共收錄1437個病例,以年紀、性別、絕育狀態、病歷中的註解、診斷詞彙進行分析。在本研究探討的16種診斷類別中,盛行率前三名分別為消化道系統疾病(n =167, 19.49%)、齒科疾病(n =164, 19.14%)與創傷性疾病(n =126, 14.7%),罹病蜜袋鼯的年紀中位數為5.83歲(四分位距 2.9-7.92歲)。年輕蜜袋鼯(1歲以下之年齡區間)傾向發生消化系統疾病(47.37%)、呼吸系統疾病(10.53%)與營養性疾病(8.42%);而老年蜜袋鼯(8歲以上之年齡區間)則更容易受到齒科疾病(26.34%)、腫瘤性疾病(16.67%)與創傷性疾病(12.9%)的影響。雌性蜜袋鼯比雄性有更高的風險罹患消化系統疾病與腫瘤性疾病;雄性蜜袋鼯則比雌性有更高可能性遭受齒科疾病與急診加護的風險。本研究為橫斷性研究,缺乏時間維度為其限制,且只能評估疾病與相關因子在單一時間點的潛在相關性,難以建立因果時序。未來以世代研究的資料收集方式進行可能有助於改善研究結果的再現性與可比較性。這是第一個使用第一線臨床診療資料庫探討寵物蜜袋鼯常見疾病的相關研究。在本研究中觀察到消化道系統疾病、齒科疾病、創傷性疾病、腫瘤性疾病、急診加護以及呼吸道疾病的診斷類別與性別、年齡及環境溫溼度具顯著相關性。深入瞭解常見疾病模式有助於支持臨床獸醫師為病患量身打造介入措施來提升寵物蜜袋鼯的健康狀態與動物福祉。
Sugar gliders are beloved pocket pets worldwide, but there exists limited veterinary study regarding the health concerns of this species in central Taiwan. If we are able to collect and analyze data regarding the proportions of common diseases, it may contribute to early diagnosis of high-risk disorders, and assist clinical veterinarians in constructing preventative care strategies for pet sugar gliders. The aim of the study was to comprehensively assess the demographic factors, percentage of disorders, and association between sex, age, temperature, humidity and diseases observed among pet sugar gliders. Total 1437 medical records were recruited from an exotic pet hospital at central Taiwan from Jan. 2020 to Dec. 2021. Information about age, gender, neuter status, annotations in the medical records, and diagnostic terms were extracted and analyzed. For 16 diagnostic categories investigated in the study, the total percentage was highest for digestive system disease (n =167, 19.49%), followed by dental disease (n =164, 19.14%) and traumatic disease (n =126, 14.7%). The median age of diseased sugar gliders was 5.83 years (interquartile range 2.9–7.92). Young sugar gliders (1year age group) prone to digestive system disease (47.37%), respiratory disease (10.53%) and nutritional disease (8.42%) while older gliders (> 8 years) are more susceptible to dental disease (26.34%)、neoplastic disease (16.67%) and traumatic disease (12.9%)。Female sugar gliders exhibited higher risk for digestive disease and neoplastic disease while male sugar gliders were more commonly afflicted with dental disorder and emergency. The limits of this cross-sectional study are that lacking time dimension and could only estimate the potential correlation between diseases and outcomes at a single time point, it is difficult to establish a causal relationship. Cohort data collection and analysis will facilitate the reproducibility and comparability of research outcomes. This is the first study applying primary-care practice clinical records for investigating common disorders of pet sugar gliders. Obvious age, gender, temperature and humidity predispositions for digestive, dental, traumatic, neoplastic, emergency and respiratory disorders were observed. Better understanding of disease pattern will support establishing tailored veterinary interventions to enhance the wellbeing and health of pet sugar gliders.
