Orchid Island, also called Lanyu, surrounded by Pacific Ocean, it contains far more symbolic meanings than image conveys. "The image of Orchid Island " does not only exist in the movies’ shots. Outside the shots, it is an indescribable image that transcends forms and visions. Like different waves produced in different ways at different times, it resonances differently in everyone's heart. Orchid Island has often been, and still is described as “the other” in the field reasearches of anthropologists since the Japanese occupation period. The situation remains in Taiwanese films productions nowadays. In Song of Orchid Island (1965), Liang Bu Liang Mei Guan Xi (1984), Fishing Luck (2005), Soul of a Demon (2007), Pongso No Tao (2008), Anywhere Somewhere Nowhere (2014), Mermaid Whispering (2017), and Long Time No Sea (2018), the shared feature of them is either the films are shot on Orchid Island, or the protagonists are set as Tao people, which is the element that the author chooses to discuss with Taiwanese movies related to Orchid Island. Through these films, the author dedicates to analyze the image markers and signifiers used by the filmmakers and production companies, seeking the image of Orchid Island overlapped by them. The author manages to explore in film study and therefore this article intends to further reflect and evaluate how to reconstruct/construct the appropriateness of Tao images and the indigenous cultural representations when "Orchid Island" is the main theme, and to understand "The image of Orchid Island" in films.
