Background and purpose: Heated Not-Burning Products(HnBP) has presented a new challenge to tobacco control efforts. Concerns have arisen that legislative changes in Taiwan may contribute to an increase in the prevalence of HnBP. Therefore, it is essential to understand the factors influencing the intention to use heated tobacco products. Risk perception plays a crucial role in smoking behavior, and public attitudes towards tobacco policies can also influence smoking intentions. The study aimed to analyze factors that could potentially influence risk perception, policy attitudes, and intention to use heated tobacco products.
Methods: This study adopted a cross-sectional design to investigate the characteristics of smokers, their perceptions of tobacco-related risks, and their attitudes towards current and future tobacco policies. Multiple linear regression was employed to explore the correlations between risk perception, policy attitudes, and tobacco product usage intentions.
Results: There is a significant difference in risk perception and policy attitudes between genders, females showing significantly higher than males. Risk perception is significantly negatively correlated with cigarettes use intention and positively correlated with HnBP use intention. Attitude to Policy is negatively correlated with tobacco product use intentions.
Conclusions and Recommendations: Overall, risk perception is relatively high among the study subjects. After controlling for confounding factors, risk perception is significantly negatively associated with the intention to use conventional cigarettes, while policy attitudes are significantly negatively associated with the intention to use heated tobacco. Health education campaigns should focus on raising awareness of the health risks associated with alternative tobacco products. Regulatory amendments should continue to move towards prohibitive measures to improve tobacco control efforts.
