Military Intelligence has existed since 1948 when Malaysia faced the threat
of Communist Terrorists or MPC. Malaya lacked people who were
members of intelligence organisations at the time. However, in 1953, the
British realised the importance of information in assisting the SF in fighting
against the MPC's armed struggle. Military Intelligence has risen and
burdened the duty that has been assigned not just to combat Intelligence, but
has also altered in tandem with the danger to the state. The arguments that
have to be examined are, First, do the Military Intelligence organisations
simply collect information about internal threats? Second, does Military
Intelligence contribute to the nation's peace and well-being by assisting in
meeting National Defence requirements and security threats? Third, is the
aspect of Military Intelligence assignment still essential given that the state
faces no external threat? Finally, is Military Intelligence as vital in Malaysia
as other agencies that contribute to national security and defence? The four
issues will be modified by evaluating intelligence agencies from developing
nations, whose responsibilities and duties are similar to today's threats. The
evaluation will highlight the relevance and the strategic impact of Military
Intelligence in carrying out its role and tasks to form National Security
interests and National Defence Policy.
